{"id":942,"date":"2017-10-12T18:33:39","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T17:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reddishblues.com\/?p=942"},"modified":"2017-10-12T20:35:40","modified_gmt":"2017-10-12T19:35:40","slug":"we-will-remember-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.reddishblues.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/12\/we-will-remember-them\/","title":{"rendered":"We will remember them&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">As we approach Armistice Day we remember the City Players that fell\u00a0in 1917.<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Scottish International Alexander \u2018Sandy\u2019 Turnbull, an FA Cup winner with City in 1904, and a league winner with United signed up to fight in 1915 and joined the Footballer\u2019s regiment, the 23rd (Service) Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. By 1917 Sandy had been made up to a lance sergeant and was about to take part in the Battle of Arras.<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Turnbull\u2019s Battalion was to\u00a0assault\u00a0the northern approaches to the village of Cherisy as part of a series of attacks\u00a0to become known as the Third Battle of the Scarpe. Zero hour was set for 03.45.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The attack itself initially provided some success, with the village reportedly falling into British hands during the\u00a0first hours of the assault. There followed some bitter fighting, however, and Cherisy would soon be\u00a0back under German control.<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">It was in the chaos that L\/Sergeant Turnbull was reported missing. It was reported that he had been wounded and that his comrades hoped he had been taken prisoner. Unfortunately he had been killed on 3<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">rd<\/span><\/sup> May 1917 and has no known grave but is one of 34,795 names commemorated on the Arras Memorial to the Missing, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">located in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Faubourg d\u2019Amiens. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Jimmy Conlin held a number of firsts with City, he was the first player the Club had paid \u00a31000, the first ever City player to be sent off and became the first City player to be capped by England. He signed up in 1914 and was first sent overseas in 1915. Conlin took part in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. It was in June 1917, during the third Battle of Ypres, on 23<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">rd<\/span><\/sup> June Conlin was killed in action. Jimmy Conlin has no known grave and is commemorated on the Nieuport memorial.\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Thomas Callaghan was a winger when City signed him from Glossop North End, and impressed in the reserve team. He would only ever make two appearances for City. Callaghan was killed during a trench raid on the 2<sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">nd<\/span><\/sup> February 1917 and is buried at C<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">hester Farm Cemetery<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">,\u00a0which is located 5 kilometres south of Ypres\u00a0town centre on the Vaartstraat.<span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">During the course of the 1917, William McOustra, whom City signed from Celtic, was wounded by a gunshot wound in the right knee. This not only ended his war, as he was discharged but it also ended his footballing career. Daniel Coupe only ever made 1 appearance at fullback for City and but his luck was slightly better in the war, being wounded by mustard gas in October 1917 and then received gunshot wounds in 1918 he managed to survive the war. Slightly luckier was James Cumming, who was part of the City 1914\/15 squad. As a Royal Engineer, Cumming was injured in 1917, receiving gunshot wounds to the leg and foot, and another injury in 1918.
